How do I preserve a painted box?

My granddaughter used her poster paints to paint one of those composite cardboard boxes that you get at a Hobby store. I would like to preserve it. Can I use something like Modge Podge on the poster paints? Thanks for your help.

I varnish everything, and it works out fine. It also makes it pretty and shiny ^_^
